VEIN dedicated server setup - first steps and Game.ini

How to set up a VEIN server: name, password and server list visibility in the panel, the Game.ini file, early access updates and world backups.

VEIN is a survival game set in an abandoned post-apocalyptic city with a strong focus on realism: electricity, water, vehicles and detailed survival mechanics. The game is in early access, so the server gets frequent updates.

Basics in the panel (Startup)

Restart the server after a change. The panel writes these values to the Game.ini file.

The Game.ini file

Path: Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini (the Files tab). Besides the fields from the panel (name, password, player count, visibility and ports - do not edit those by hand), it may contain gameplay settings that the developers add in new versions of the game.

When editing it:

A server for friends only

The simplest way to run a private server:

  1. Set a Server Password.
  2. Set Public Server to False.
  3. Share the address and port from the Network tab and the password with your friends.

Early access updates

VEIN changes often. The server downloads updates by itself on restart. After a big update:

Backups

Set up a daily backup and an automatic restart in the client area or in the Schedules tab of the game panel. The daily restart also pulls in new updates.

Connecting

A public server can be found by name in the in-game server list. A private one is joined directly by IP address and port.

Performance

VEIN simulates a lot of objects in the city. For a group of players choose a plan with at least 8 GB of RAM and watch the usage in the panel - if it keeps hitting the limit, it is time for a bigger plan.
