What memory usage depends on
Most of the memory is used by the game world itself: the terrain, player buildings and objects the server has to simulate all the time. That is why a server uses more memory after a few months of play than when it was freshly set up, even with the same number of players.
- Players - each one loads a piece of the world around them. Players spread across the map use more than the same players in one base.
- Mods and plugins - especially those that generate terrain, run an economy or log changes.
- World size - large maps, extra dimensions and Workshop maps increase the demand.
How to check if the memory is enough
The game panel shows the server memory usage live. If it keeps sitting at the top of your plan and the server slows down, it is a sign that you should upgrade.

Frequently asked questions
Where do these values come from?
They are our recommendations from running game servers, not official requirements of the game developers. We count the memory for the server itself, add a margin for every player online and, for some games, for mods or plugins.
Does more RAM always mean smoother gameplay?
No. Once there is enough memory, the CPU decides how smooth the server runs, and in Minecraft also the number and quality of plugins. Adding memory beyond what the server needs does not help.
What happens when the server runs out of memory?
The server slows down and, in extreme cases, shuts down without an error in the console. It is the most common reason for sudden shutdowns of modded servers.
Can I upgrade the server later?
Yes, at any time from the client area. Your world, mods and settings stay, and you only pay the difference for the days left in the current period.
