FAQ

What is a MOTD?

The MOTD (message of the day) is the server description that players see under the server name in the in-game server list. It has two lines and supports colors and simple formatting.

Where do I paste the generated MOTD?

Into the server.properties file in the main server folder, in the line that starts with motd=. Save the file and restart the server to see the change.

Why do the codes look like \u00A7?

That is how the section sign is written in server.properties. It keeps the colors working regardless of the file encoding. Plugins and panels usually accept the plain § sign.

How many characters fit in a MOTD?

In practice about 45 characters per line, on two lines. The exact number depends on the width of the characters, because the Minecraft font is not monospaced.

Will players see the colors on every version?

Yes, color codes work in every Java version. Hex colors (for example #FF8800) only work on newer servers, which is why the generator uses the classic 16 colors.
