Modrinth is a modern alternative to CurseForge: a faster website, an open API and more and more packs, especially on Fabric. A server with a Modrinth pack is just as easy to set up as one with a CurseForge pack.
1. Find the pack and its ID
Go to modrinth.com/modpacks and open the pack. The ID is the last part of the page address. For this address:
https://modrinth.com/modpack/cobblemon-fabric
the ID is cobblemon-fabric. You can also use the short ID from the ⋯ → Copy ID menu.
Make sure the pack supports servers: the Environments section on the pack page (or the description) should say Server or Client and server.
2. Order a server with the pack ID
When you order a Modrinth modpack server, enter the ID in the modpack ID field. The server downloads the pack by itself and installs the loader (Fabric, Quilt, Forge or NeoForge), the Minecraft version and all the mods. Client-only mods (shaders, minimaps) are skipped automatically.
3. Pack version
The newest version (latest) is installed by default. To pin a specific one:
- Open the Versions tab on the pack page and choose a version.
- Copy its ID (from the version page address or with Copy ID).
- In the game panel, enter it in the modpack version field in the Startup tab.
- Make a backup in Backups, then use Settings → Reinstall Server.
Players need exactly the same pack version as the server.
4. How players join
- Modrinth App - search for the pack, click Install and pick the version that matches the server.
- Prism Launcher - Add Instance → Modrinth, search for the pack and choose the version.
After starting the pack: Multiplayer → Add Server and the address from the Network tab in the game panel.
Popular packs for a server
- Cobblemon - Pokemon in Minecraft, great for a server with friends.
- Fabulously Optimized - plain Minecraft with performance mods (mostly client-side, but the server benefits too).
- Simply Optimized and Additive - light "better vanilla" packs.
How much RAM
Fabric packs are usually lighter than big Forge packs. 6 GB is enough for 20-80 mods, bigger packs need 8 GB or more.
Adding your own mods to the pack
You can add mods to the mods folder in the Files tab, but remember that every player has to add them too, and after updating the pack with Reinstall Server the extra mods may need to be uploaded again. It is easier to keep the pack unchanged, or to build your own pack in Modrinth App and share it with your friends.
