A modpack is a ready set of dozens or hundreds of mods that the author picked and configured to work together. Building such a server by hand takes hours. With us you only enter the pack number.
1. Find the modpack ID
Go to curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks and open the pack page. On the right, in the About Project section, you will find the Project ID - a number such as 715572.
Popular packs for servers:
- All the Mods - hundreds of mods, tech and magic, for long playthroughs.
- RLCraft - very hard survival.
- Create: Above and Beyond - machines and automation with the Create mod.
- Better Minecraft - an improved "vanilla" Minecraft.
2. Order a server and enter the ID
When you order a CurseForge modpack server, enter the Project ID in the modpack ID field. The server downloads the pack by itself and installs the right loader (Forge, NeoForge or Fabric) and Minecraft version.
The first install takes longer than a regular server, often a few minutes: a pack can weigh several hundred MB.
3. How much RAM?
Modpacks are demanding. As a rough guide:
| Pack | RAM |
|---|---|
| light (up to 100 mods) | 6 GB |
| medium (100-250 mods) | 8 GB |
| large (All the Mods, 300+ mods) | 10-12 GB |
Authors often list the recommended RAM on the pack page - stick to that value. Too little memory shows up as a very long start, lag and server freezes.
4. Java version
The server starts on Java 21, which fits packs for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. Older packs need an older Java, which you switch in the Startup tab of the game panel (the Docker image): Minecraft 1.17-1.20.4 uses Java 17, and 1.16.5 and older (for example RLCraft) uses Java 8. If the version does not match, the panel suggests the right one when the server fails to start.
5. How players join
Every player needs the same pack in the same version:
- Install the CurseForge app or Prism Launcher.
- Search for the pack and install the version that matches the server.
- Start the pack and connect with Multiplayer → Add Server.
You can check the pack version on the server in the Startup tab, in the modpack version field.
A specific version instead of the newest
The newest pack version (latest) is installed by default. To stay on one version, enter the File ID of the chosen file from the pack page (the Files tab, the number in the file address) in the version field in the Startup tab. Then use Settings → Reinstall Server.
Updating a pack on a live world can be risky - authors sometimes remove mods. Always make a backup in the Backups tab first.
The pack does not start
- Check that the pack has a server version (Server Pack). Most big packs do, but some small ones are single-player only.
- Look at the console: an
OutOfMemoryErrormeans too little RAM. - Client-only mods (for example minimaps or shaders) sometimes block the start. The console shows the name of the problematic mod - remove it from the
modsfolder.
